Artist Statement

Issy Wilson's work explores organic connections and dendritic structures through canvas, calico, linen, cheesecloth, muslin, acrylic, PVA, ink, tea, coffee, and natural dyes. She gathers inspiration from her environment with a focus on the natural world--looking at water stains on pavement, bare trees in the winter, and the moss growing in the cracks of rocks and bricks. The studio has become an ecosystem/installation of its own with pieces evolving and creating one another through symbiotic relationships. In an effort to create a more sustainable practice, Issy is searching for ways to minimize her use of paint, to utilize more natural pigments, and to focus on natural fibers that have ideally been recycled or are second-hand.

Issy is an artist from Chicago, and she is currently studying at the Royal College of Art in London for her MA in Painting. In 2020, she graduated summa cum laude with a BFA from Stamps School of Art and Design at the University of Michigan. Upon graduation, Issy hiked the entire Appalachian Trail–a 2200 mile (3500 km) foot trail in the eastern part of the United States. This six-month experience redefined her practice and led to twelve murals in six states and the “Artist Quilt” (a collaborative project with 89 artists from around the world). Currently, she continues to further her own painting, textile, and installation practice with research themes on root and fungal connections, paths and journeys, and unexpected moments of community.
